Monty Reed grew up in Seattle, Washington. He served as an Army Airborne Ranger for four years. The last year was spent in a hospital while he recovered from a parachute accident. He still suffers from complications from that accident today.
After becoming physically disABLED Monty completed college placement testing at NSCC and failed the math portion miserably. Fortunately the Testing staff at NSCC were trained and experienced enough to notice there might be a problem.
Monty was invited to take additional testing to identify any learning issues. The testing determined that he had an undiagnosed learning disability. The Student Support Services staff were able to help Monty determine how he needed to learn differently. Monty calls it his "learning style" not necessarily a learning disability.
Within a few quarters of applying the new strategies Monty became president of the honors society Phi Theta Kapa and became involved in student government.
By the time Monty completed his degree at NSCC he had also been recognized as "Chemistry Student of the Year", helped win the Washington Community College Humanities Association award for the www.Lictonspringsreview.com magazine He was Co Captain of the Golf Team and president of the Robotics Club.
While at NSCC he launched the prototype phase of They Shall Walk.org a non profit research company committed to improving the quality of life by developing the LIFESUIT Robotic Exoskeleton so paralyzed persons can walk and exercise.
The LIFESUIT was inspired by “Starship Troopers”, by Science Fiction Author, Robert Heinlein.
He transferred to the University of Washington were he was allowed to design his own major called: biosynthetics. He plans to graduate with a bachelors degree in June 2010 and continue to work on a PhD at the UW.
He has been recognized as two-time NASA Space Grant Scholar and a Mary Gates Scholar. He was also selected to the National Honor Society at the UW.
Monty is committed to giving the gift of walking with your support.
